With the "50 Shades of Grey" franchise turning into a worldwide phenomenon, now more than ever the kink and alternative lifestyle is a serious contender in mainstream TV, books and media. People everywhere – whether they are members of the kink community or not – are openly discussing the world of BDSM and other alternative lifestyle choices. And this isn’t the first time. The popular TV show “Sullivan and Son” dealt directly with a man who liked to wear women’s underwear, while “Family Guy” is known to reference tentacle sex. These are seriously mainstream TV shows and books and it got me thinking: how do all of YOU feel about alternative lifestyles being part of the mainstream media?

I personally find it refreshing to see the vocabulary and practices of alternative communities in mainstream television and media. I think it adds an extra dimension to these outlets that wasn’t there before and it feels like the writers are giving a special shout out to me! I think it’s great when we are able to have an open discussion about alternative and kink communities - I welcome the references when they arise.

So that’s my take on it. What do you think? How does a mainstream discussion of alternative and kink lifestyles affect you?
